HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR

Today is Chinese New Year's Day. It's an important festival for 1/5 of the world population!
Chinese families gather together for dinner on New Year's Eve and clean their houses to sweep away bad fortune on New Year's Day. Traditionally, kids are given red envelopes with "lucky money" and positive wishes on New Year's Day.

There are celebrations all over the world: fireworks, lighting firecrackers, traditional lion dances and great parades in many cities... even in Madrid!

THANKSGIVING DAY

Thanksgiving is a holiday in the USA and Canada when people give thanks.
The first thanksgiving was celebrated by the pilgrims after the first harvest in the New World in 1621.
It is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday of November in USA and on the second Monday of October in Canada.

Families and friends usually eat a special meal together (turkey is the main dish) This meal also includes mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie and stuffing.

INTERNATIONAL MUSIC DAY

21st June is the International Music Day. In Vanuatu (Oceania) women make music with water. Do you like it?

HOLI, FESTIVAL OF COLOURS

Holi is a spring festival also known as the festival of colours and the festival of love. It is an ancient Hindu religious festival which has become popular with non-Hindus in many parts of the world.

Although the festival date varies every year, Holi is usually celebrated in March. It means the arrival of spring, end of winter, and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair ruptured relationships.

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated on March 17th.

In Ireland, Saint Patrick’s Day is a holy day and a national holiday.

Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland as he was the one who brought Christianity to the Irish.

Saint Patrick’s Day is celebrated in countries around the world by people with Irish heritage.

They wear green and take part in festivities and parades.

The New York City parade is very famous. It lasts for hours.

WORLD BOOK DAY

World Book Day is a yearly event on April 23rd, organized by the UNESCO, to promote reading, publishing and copyright.

The connection between 23 April and books was first made in 1923 by booksellers in Catalonia, Spain, as a way to honour the author Miguel de Cervantes, who died on this date.

In 1995 UNESCO decided that the World Book Day would be celebrated on 23 April, as the date is also the anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare and Garcilaso de la Vega.
